Applied Policy Project Degree Requirement

The MPP program is a project-oriented, nonthesis degree program requiring students to complete an independent Applied Policy Project as part of the degree requirements. MPP students should be capable of conducting thorough public policy research and analysis, and must complete the Applied Policy Project before they can graduate. The purpose and expectation of the Applied Policy Project is that students apply aspects of the MPP curriculum to the analysis of a public policy issue. Students determine a topic/research question and complete the project in conjunction with a faculty member or with a community member who has expertise in a content area relevant to the project. During their last, or second to last semester, students register for the PUBPL 6950 Applied Policy Project course. The purpose of this course is to guide students through their project with assistance from their peers and the instructor. The expectation is that the project is completed and submitted to the instructor, the content supervisor and to the program staff, by the end of the course. Students are strongly encouraged to select their project prior to starting the Applied Policy Project course.

Graduation 2009Graduation Requirements

Students must apply to graduate through The University of Utah Graduate School. To be eligible for graduation, students are required to submit an application for candidacy. The application is due two semesters before graduation and no earlier than one year before graduation.

Deadlines for application are:

To graduate end of Spring 2010, submit application for candidacy by November 2, 2009.

To graduate end of Summer, submit application for candidacy by February 1.
To graduate end of Fall, submit application for candidacy by June 1.

Failure to submit your application for candidacy prior to the deadline may delay your graduation.  Please complete your candidacy form carefully, then return it to Angie for processing.

Students will graduate when all degree requirements are met and all grades are submitted.  Diplomas are mailed at the end of the semester in which the work was completed and the appropriate paperwork has been processed.  A diploma will be mailed within 90 days to the last address The University of Utah has for the student.  If you would like to verify or change your address (and we strongly encourage you to do so), please go to secured student access of student information systems at https://gate.acs.utah.edu/ or call the registrars office at 581-8968.

Commencement and convocation ceremonies are only held in the Spring, usually in May.  If a student is within a year of graduation they may walk in the convocation ceremony.  To order graduation regalia, please contact the bookstore in January to find out when they will be processing orders.  Their phone number is 581-6325.  FYI:  The MPP program is in the College of Social and Behavioral Science.
